Welcome to Better in Therapy

for Hypnotherapy & Counselling.

I'm Amanda Swan and this is my website for my private practice located in Chartham, Canterbury.

Better in Therapy

Better in Therapy is a hypnotherapy and counselling practice in Chartham, near Canterbury. I specialise in anxiety, depression, stress, confidence building, self-esteem, and weight loss. These are the areas of my experience over the last fifteen years in various settings including the youth criminal justice system and a private SEN school. I also have a lot of experience working directly with autism, ADHD and oppositional defiance disorder (ODD) in adolescents.
I qualified as a hypnotherapist in May 2017 and currently training as a person centered counsellor with an integrated approach. A person centered counsellor puts the client at the center of the therapy, allowing the client to make choices and decisions in their way and in their own time with the guidance of the counsellor. My clients often report feeling considerably calmer and much more relaxed after sessions, and this stays with them for some time after the session has finished.
We lead such busy lives, the art of relaxation is often forgotten, but is an essential part of keeping us healthy because it lowers blood pressure, aids digestions and slows down thought processes which enables people to make better and more informed decisions that have a positive knock-on effect in many other aspects of their life.
As a hypnotherapist, I use a range of scripts to help clients make changes to their way of thinking at a subconscious level. I also do regression as part of my hypnotherapy work for issues that may be buried deep in the past. My clients come to see me for a range of issues including stress, anxiety, depression, weight loss, anger management, self-confidence/self-worth/self-esteem and more.
Each client is valued, listened to and respected in their own right, and each session is individually tailored to each clients specific needs. I also offer taster sessions for people who have never tried hypnotherapy before and want to see if it would be right for them.
I work under the The National Hypnotherapy Society and The National Counselling Society with a strict code of ethics and guidelines. I am also a member of the British Psychological Society and I partake in continuous professional development (CPD) as part of my work ethic and to keep up to date with therapeutic interventions.
Look Inside

What is hypnotherapy?

How does hypnotherapy work?

The process of hypnotherapy is not as complicated as you might think. As a client you will be helped by the hypnotherapist into a very deep relaxed state. This state is where the brain waves slow down, similar to when we go to sleep, however you will not go to asleep.  You will be conscious and in complete control throughout the whole process. The point at which your brain waves meet Theta level (this is the scientific part) is when you are in deep relaxation, known as the hypnotic state, and ready to receive the positive suggestions from the hypnotherapist. These positive suggestions will be based on what you discuss with your therapist and tailored specifically to your needs. These messages will be taken on by the sub-conscious. The sub-conscious, holds on to these positive suggestions and that is why the results of hypnotherapy can very long lasting. An ideal example of this is demonstrated when people want to give up the habit of smoking (smoking cessation); often, clients who have hypnotherapy to help them give up smoking, do stop smoking altogether and are very unlikely to relapse.

Our Services

My list of services at a glance for hypnotherapy and counselling or counselling alone.

Hypnotherapy & Counselling for Anxiety

Anxiety is now quite a common condition, but nevertheless it is quite debilitating for many people. Often symptoms come in the form of panic attacks, sweating, palpitations and a ‘whizzing mind’ to name a few. Hypnotherapy aims to slow all of this down using Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy & Counselling for Depression

With our ever increasing lifestyle pressures, and often coinciding with anxiety symptoms, depression is also a well known condition or many, whether it be short term or long term. Hypnotherapy, with its deep state of relaxation in the hypnotic state, can help mind and body connect again.

Hypnotherapy & Counselling for Stress

Stress can be detrimental to our health by raising bloody pressure, causing physical aches and pains and sometimes leading to other difficulties such as anxiety or depression. Hypnotherapy can reduce the symptoms of stress by reducing bloody pressure, aiding digestion and provide clearer and healthier thought processes. The natural benefits of hypnotherapy are likely to reduce the possibility of further developing anxiety and/or depression in the future.

Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss

People often ask me if I can help them lose weight. My initial response is always to get to know the client first as there can various reasons why a person wants to lose weight. Clients have often tried other types of help such as diets or slimming tablets before they come to hypnotherapy.
